A huge victory has been won for women in uniform, and I don't mind saying that a wash of relief and satisfaction washed over me when I read the headlines.

The military is implementing the recommendation of the Pentagon's Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, an advisory panel made up of medical professionals from the military services, that Plan B (the brand name for levonorgestrel, a.k.a. the "Morning After" pill) be made available in every military treatment facility.

Until now, the over-the-counter medication has been available in many, but not all, military pharmacies. Since it hadn't been made mandatory in TRICARE formularies, a servicewoman wasn't guaranteed access to emergency contraception. This has been a major issue for equality for women in the military, especially with Upper Brass making slanted policies that impact women soldiers' careers while being dismissive of the need for such medications.

Hurray!!!!

Absolutely! I'm so glad that the Armed Forces will be making this available.

Sara G.

I have worked in a VA hospital since 1989. When I started there, it was rare that we saw female patients. As strange as that may sound. They were older women that had served their two years and were now, quite a bit older ...than I, anyway.

Within 7 years, we had started a "women's center"...and actually bought "pink pj's" for the female patients. Rooms were being moved and sectioned off for our female patients.

I left the VA for 10 years, returning in 2006....

This I found unbelievable.

One evening not long after I returned to the VA hospital, we had a female patient come into the ER in danger of miscarrying. We had no medication to help her and of course, as any hospital would do, we got in touch with the closest facility and got the needed medications to take care of this female.

Since then I am happy and relieved to say that now we carry a full line of medications for any problem a female may present with.

Long time coming, eh????

A long time, yes, but thank goodness they saw the need and slowly took measures to fill it. I hope this becomes standard in any facility that treats women! Have a great weekend, SaraG!
